THEME: Myth and Modernity
MEDIA: Short Story
EXPLANATION OF PIECE: This is actually a second submission for May's 'Myth and Modernity' theme. I hope that's allowed! In my last story, the narrator scorns the idea of a ghost from the 90s who listens to techno, but as soon as I had written that, I thought, well, why not? Perhaps not a ghost, but a mythical creature of some sort. After all, raves seem similar in some ways to the sort of pagan/tribal gatherings where medieval folk might have tried to summon such a creature.

Constructive criticism welcome, as always. I have been told that it doesn't seem like its finished yet, so I'd welcome any opinions on that in particular.

EXPLANATION OF PIECE:
I feel a little guilty for ignoring the the "modernity" side of the prompt, but I was inspired a while ago to make some "masks" as a response.  The first one is still a WIP and I'm not posting pictures of it, it's an imp and I haven't decided what the final process will be.

Oh MY GOD! It's the first!

I know last month there wasn't any theme, so let's just say that the Myth and Modernity was live for two months. (I actually just finished what I will be posting as my prompt response YESTERDAY, so there is that-- I'm gonna take some pictures and get it posted for your viewing pleasure) Those of you who *did* respond, you rock to the nth! Those of you who didn't, it's never too late!

Anyway: What should the theme be this month? Comment here with a suggestion (comments screened) and there will be a poll on Monday or Tuesday.

THEME:Myth and Modernity
MEDIA: Short Story
EXPLANATION OF PIECE: Rather than looking at classical mythology, I decided to look at the way myths are still created in modern times. Although oral storytelling is rarer these days, there are still anecdotes that are passed on from person to person, changed and polished until they take on a legendary quality.

The most obvious example is the ghost story. Most people know someone who will claim to have seen a ghost and they are usually quite happy to tell you all about it, which can be entertaining, if not entirely credible. And again, if the place you live is small enough and old enough, you will usually find that the residents have created some sort of local legend about a ghost, My town reportedly has a haunted pub and a witch, for example.

With this story, I wanted to write a ghost story told anecdotally, as though it is being spoken to a group of friends. I have been reading a lot of M.R. James ghost stories recently and have tried to write in a modern-day version of his style, with the narrator as an everyday sort of person telling events that either happened to them or to someone they know.

Opinions and constructive criticism welcome.

Name: Lisa

Experience: Ah, the tricky part. I haven't got much, really. Poetry and short prose are my only media - the only ones I'll inflict on anyone else, that is. I read a lot and always have done. I majored in French in college, have a facility with languages, and a great, galloping love of words. My logophilia has served me well when I've worked as a copy editor and copywriter. Oh! I did take a creative writing course in school, but it was part of my French degree and I seldom write in French anymore.

Influences: Everything I read is grist for the mill. Fairytales and mythology have always played an important part in my inner life, and they sometimes make their presence known in my writing.

What do you hope to get from this community: Like others, I feel that I've become lazy and require a stern taskmaster when it comes to creating. With a theme and a deadline both, I've no excuse not to write something, even if I turn it in a week late.

Examples: I have examples of my writing in my journal, but they're locked in my creative writing filter. I might have proper examples if I actually submitted my work for publication, but the idea frankly terrifies me.

Devil's Gap Promotional Card
Devil's Gap Promotional Card
Our Museums' May prompt was Myth and Modernity. I've been seeking the right phrase a while and heard the words "Devil's Gap" on the radio this morning and that sold me - a Western film cycle based on the Norse Edda. The phrasing is adapted from the Volsunga, I'm still not sold on it but wanted to get my entry in before it was more than a single day late. I'm also thinking it needs something more at the bottom right, but part of me wants to use that as a branding-area for my own "signature." It seems like I do a lot of these, and enjoy them, so I might as well make sure folks know where to find them, right? Questions and comments more than welcome.
